I Wish I Could Say the Things You Do
Hey everyone!
This past week I was volunteering at my old elementary school with my school’s campus ministry. We go and work with the second and third graders; we play games and basically just hang out.
These kids have tons of character and I love working with them. They are so real and possess that innocent quality that only kids can have. Since I went to that school, it’s fun to go back and see everyone.
I walked in the room on Thursday, and everyone said hey. There were four tables of kids—three of girls, and one of boys. I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m a little less than six feet tall. I heard, from the boy’s table, things like “Whoa, she’s so tall!” or “She’s like three times the size of me!” I wasn’t really sure how to take this, but when I was talking to them later on, I learned it was a good thing.
I sometimes wish I could be a young kid again. They don’t have that fear of society or the never ending pressure that teenagers and adults have. If they think something, they just blurt it out. While sometimes they don’t have the best timing and it could get them into trouble, it’s a good quality because you always know what they think.
As kids start to grow up, they start to learn that it’s “bad” to say what you’re thinking. Soon, kids are confused about when it’s okay to say things, so they stop talking. This is unfortunate, because everyone deserves to be heard. Maybe we should all take a lesson from these kids; life would be much easier if we lived it their way.
Thanks for reading!
