Tobacco Facts
- In Massachusetts, 7400 young people become daily smokers every year.
- 117,000 young people who are under 18 and living in MA right now will eventually die early from smoking. (1)
- Almost 9 in 10 adult smokers became addicted to tobacco before age 19. (2)
- More than half of high-school smokers have tried to quit. (3)
- Cigarette companies spend more than $15 billion a year on marketing. In MA, it’s estimated to be $233 million per year. (4) (Man, we could put the hurt on Big Tobacco with that kind of money!)
- Big Tobacco targets groups like young people and women by creating special products, like flavored cigarettes that make good “starter” cigarettes (5), and Camel’s new “No. 9” cigarette for women.
- Big Tobacco spends big money targeting racial and ethnic minority and poorer communities. (6) They want to get poor people and people of color hooked!
- Nearly 400,000 youth a year
start smoking because they’ve seen it in movies. (7) - About 60% of the youth exposure to smoking in movies is from movies that are rated G, PG, or PG-13 – you know what that means! (8)
