Drop Dead

Tobacco is a top killer of Americans and many people don’t realize just how many deaths are caused by tobacco-related illnesses. Every day, 24 people in MA die due to tobacco. Get ready to practice your drama skills by staging a drop dead event in your school or community.

HOSTING THE EVENT:

  • Find a high-traffic area to stage your event. Get permission from the appropriate adult.

  • The 24 people involved in “dropping dead” should try to wear the same color shirts or all wear an 84 T-shirt so that they can be easily spotted and create more of a statement. (The 84 T-shirts are limited in supply - call to order.)
  • Everyone gathers in the cafeteria or common area. People can be in different areas of the room or together in one mass group. One chapter member should yell out “drop dead!” and all participants should be ready to (gently!) fall to the floor. People can shout statistics, encourage visitors to an info table, hand out The 84 Promo Card (Chapters can order for free. Use the order form in the Chapter Toolkit), or ask people to take action (make sure you know what you want people to take action about!).
  • Tell local media about the event and encourage them to cover it.

Make sure to take pictures and submit them to get media attention from local newspapers, TV stations, and decision makers.

Chapter members needed: 24 to participate, additional 3 to 4 to take pictures, pass out information, and host an info table

Supplies: fact sheets, The 84 Promo Card, banner/signs (optional)

Prep time: 2 weeks
