KBD Planning Committee's Latest Conference Call
Tuesday, March 2, 2010 - 18:10

What’s up 84? Eleven of the youth on the Planning Committee have continued to plan for KBD. As usual, our conference calls always consist of us getting to know each other better and of course, more planning!

Something we are delighted to announce is that Kick Butts Day is just 3 weeks away! Yeah!!! We are so excited to tell you that a total of 24 groups from across the state have registered for Kick Butts Day so far! What an amazing number! We know that more people will be joining and registering soon.

This week, we reviewed our creative ideas for the morning and public event, which we have planned, and also finalized our roles for the event! Many of us will be emceeing throughout the course of the morning and public event in the afternoon! Please support us all the way!

Be on the lookout for some photos taken on Thursday, February 18th when seven of us met up for our in-person meeting. Also, be on the lookout for my next blurbs about our conference calls as we near Kick Butts Day! Can’t wait!

Until next call,

Kayla

The Planning Committee's In-Person Meeting!!
Tuesday, March 2, 2010 - 18:08

What’s up 84? I have great news! Seven of the members on the Kick Butts Day Planning Committee have finally met in person! It was an awesome 3 hours together, and need I say that we discussed, continued to plan, learned more about each other, and had fun!

To begin this meeting and before we planned anything, we recognized the purpose of Kick Butts Day. On March 24th we want to show and get attention for how Big Tobacco is targeting youth with other tobacco products. They do this through their creation of new, easy-to-use, low cost tobacco and candy-flavored products. We also want to get attention for how youth are powerful and are fighting back. Thus, throughout KBD, youth will have a chance to present on actions they’ve taken to better their communities.

As a team, we developed goals for the beginning part of KBD, and implemented these goals into possible ideas. We are thinking of surprising our audience with a powerful performance of some sort: a strong welcome, energizers, powerful presentation, to get folks pumped for a training on how to meet and speak with legislators!

For the public event, we are excited for our special speakers to join us and inspire the audience even more! We are hoping to see youth present on their work, hear stories, and give out achievement awards! We know that this will be a packed, yet fun, day!

Lastly, we are excited to tell you all that some of us youth on the planning committee will co-emcee with adults on Kick Butts Day. Look out for us! We’ve also brainstormed ideas for t-shirt slogans; look out for that, too!

Until the next conference call,

Kayla

What's the Word with the Kick Butts Day Planning Committee?
Monday, February 8, 2010 - 17:47

Good evening 84! Let’s talk about the new hot group that meets every two weeks to plan Kick Butts Day 2010! We just had our fourth conference call, and we are eager to announce that we will be meeting in person soon! This will be a great chance for us to meet each other in person as well as learn more about each other.

On our fourth call, we reviewed a proposed schedule for the entire Kick Butts Day event. After reviewing it, we unanimously agreed that the agenda looked great. We are excited to bring positive and powerful attention to The 84 Movement in the morning session, on the way to the Statehouse, and at the Statehouse itself. We are also asking youth to prep for any interviews with the media – which is totally a cool experience!

Next, we talked about our focus for the day – how the tobacco industry is targeting youth! We figured that we want to bring examples with us to show how the tobacco industry is targeting young people. An example of this is showing other tobacco products and youth-friendly advertisements. This message is a good way to point out that even though the industry regulates its products, they still get around it by constantly introducing other products.

We closed this meeting with inspiring words that carried the feelings of hope and excitement as we come closer and closer to planning two crucial components of KBD 2010: the training and the public event!

Until our next call,
Kayla

What's the Word with the Kick Butts Day Planning Committee?
Monday, February 8, 2010 - 17:35

Hello 84 members! Listen up for some exciting news! The KBD Planning Committee had their third conference call. In the midst of so much planning, we are still connecting as a statewide movement, representing The 84, and ready to implement our ideas into the agenda for Kick Butts Day.

This week, we discussed the possible things we are going to do in the morning to get the crowd of 250-300 youth and adults pumped for the day ahead. We came up with a lot of ideas, including creating a slogan to chant throughout the day, connecting as a movement, and introducing what The 84 is and why we joined the movement.

After sharing all of these exciting ideas, we then discussed the new 84 t-shirts! We were so pumped as we talked about a color we think would represent The 84 and also be a favorite among the participants of Kick Butts Day. The 9 of use took a vote on a list of colors for the new color of the shirts everyone will receive on Kick Butts Day. Whatever color is chosen, we will use it as a cohesive theme for any decorations and posters that we will put up around the Statehouse. We will let you know what color we decide on soon! That’s all for this call, folks!

Until next call,
Kayla

Second Planning Call with the KBD Planning Committee!!
Thursday, February 4, 2010 - 15:45

What’s up 84 members? It’s Kayla, here to tell you about the KBD Planning Committee’s second conference call!

We began this meeting with an icebreaker that helped us to learn about each other even more. By sharing the problems that we saw in our region as well as our dynamic hopes for the year 2010, we were able to build friendships with each other – despite our regional distance. How cool is that?!

After our first conference call where we focused on understanding the flow of the day, we began to develop goals for the welcoming and training in the morning. As a group, we decided that we want to energize and connect as a movement and interactively train youth to meet with their legislators. We then decided that the tone for our morning session will be upbeat, passionate, and powerful. We want to make the morning especially lively because it will set the tone for a wonderful day. It will also wake everyone up from the peaceful naps they’ll have while driving into Boston on Kick Butts Day.

Next, we came up with goals for the afternoon event! We want to effectively get the message out that tobacco companies still target youth, and that we as youth are going to fight this! With this in mind, we are going to keep people's spirits up and keep them focused on what they need to do in their communities so that we will be recognized as powerful leaders in Massachusetts.

To conclude this talk, we committed to planning more in the next conference call in two weeks. In the meantime, you can check out The 84 facebook page.

Until our next call,

Kayla

1st conference call with the KBD Planning Committee!!
Tuesday, February 2, 2010 - 14:55

Greetings 84 members!

I’m Kayla, one of The 84 interns, looking to give you the scoop on what’s happening with a group of 26 youth around the state. We call ourselves The Kick Butts Day (KBD) Planning Committee, and we are dedicating time every two weeks to have meetings and plan. We represent every region around the state and are brainstorming diverse ideas to make March 24th, 2010 – Kick Butts Day – a memorable day for both youth and adults across the state. I’ll be keeping you updated on our planning process over the next few months until the big day!

For our first call, we really took the time to understand the flow of the day. This includes a welcoming, interactive training, meeting with legislators, and the oral and powerful speeches at the Grand Staircase, in the Statehouse. We realized that we were going to be planning a crucial welcoming and training in the three hours of the morning on March 24th. Not only that, we are going to help plan an afternoon event at the MA Statehouse, in which youth and adults will be speaking and giving presentations to state legislators and their aides. We are hoping that media coverage will be present for the afternoon event!

Our planning group wants to make a huge impact on the 250+ youth and adults that will attend! In order to do this, we are maintaining connections not only through phone, but also through facebook, a popular site amongst us youth. We have an 84 fan page, and more! If you haven’t already done so, join our fan page! (Click here to join us on facebook)

Until next time,

Kayla
