This month The 84 Movement is shining the spotlight on the Generation of Fierce Local Youth (GFLY) Chapter! GFLY is made up of several teens from Fitchburg, MA who have been fighting Big Tobacco's influence in their community since 2009.
Last year, there was lots of work to be done! Over the summer, they hosted an 84 Awareness Party that included a dinner of rice and beans and macaroni salad while they shared information about what The 84 Movement is all about.
Last spring, members created a drawing contest that challenged youth to visually show how tobacco companies market their products to kids for a chance to win a gift card from Subway.
But 7th grader Nasharie Peralta's favorite event was the Drop Dead Event, where 84 members gathered in a local park to act out the Drop Dead Demo and share information about the dangers of smoking and deceptive tobacco marketing. Nasharie is in her second year of involvement with GFLY's 84 Chapter. She says she originally became involved because, "Whenever I go somewhere, I always see youth always smoking. I have asthma so I don't really like that and I don't like to see people get sick or die."
In the coming year, the Chapter is focused on recruiting more members and continuing to get the word out about the harmful effects of tobacco. Last March, they met with their local Board of Health to work on a local change in stoping e-cigarettes and the sale of tobacco products in pharmacies. We look forward to their progress on this important issue!
